Mirror manufacturing method

Aug 03, 2024

There are two methods for surface processing of glass to form a reflective imaging surface: chemical silver plating and vacuum evaporation. The most commonly used is chemical silver plating. This method is to dissolve silver nitrate in water, add ammonia and sodium hydroxide solution and dilute it into silver hydroxide ammonia complex salt to make a silver plating solution. Invert sugar or formaldehyde, potassium sodium tartrate solution is used as the reducing solution. After cutting, edge grinding (if necessary, grinding and polishing), and surface cleaning, the glass is sensitized with a dilute solution of stannous chloride, then cleaned, and then the surface is immediately immersed in a mixture of silver plating solution and reducing solution. After the mirror surface is formed, it is cleaned and then copper plating and protective paint can be applied. The vacuum evaporation method is to clean the glass, place it in an evaporation device with a vacuum degree of 0.1 to 10Pa, and energize the spiral tungsten wire. The high temperature generated causes the aluminum alloy in the spiral to evaporate into a gaseous state and deposit on the glass surface to form a mirror surface. An electron gun can also be used instead of a tungsten wire for heating. The vacuum evaporation method can also process smooth metal surfaces into mirror surfaces.
Simple mirror making at home
Plating O. A mirror of 5 square meters requires 5 grams of silver nitrate, 10-15 milliliters of ammonia (25%), 2 grams of sodium hydroxide, 1.3 grams of glucose, 25 milliliters of alcohol, and a little stannous chloride. Prepare solution A first. Place silver nitrate in a clean, oil-free 500 milliliters glass cup, add 100 milliliters of distilled water to dissolve, and add ammonia dropwise, stirring while adding. A gray precipitate appears at first; continue to add ammonia until the precipitate is completely dissolved. After the solution is clarified, add 2 grams of sodium hydroxide and 50 milliliters of water to dissolve it, then pour it in and cool it down.
Raw materials and requirements:
The glass should be flat, flawless, transparent glass without bubbles in the middle;
Silver nitrate, the content is above 99.5%;
Ammonia, the concentration is 25-28%;
Potassium sodium tartrate, pure chemical items.
